Venezuela and Russia banned the messaging application Signal. The application is the most popular choice to avoid encrypted messaging and government censorship, and the ban is part of a crackdown on opponents within the two countries.
According to MSNBC, the ban was imposed in Venezuela as a result of the controversial results of last month's presidential election, which led to protests and arrests.
Internet monitoring service NetBlocks said signals became inaccessible on several internet providers in the country since Thursday evening.
According to Interfax, Russian communications minister Roskomenedzer said that the signal violated the country's laws.
A Reuters report said that even in Russia, users cannot register in a new account without a VPN.
